Lunar Society Moonstones, Stone sculpture memorial at Asda supermarket grounds in Queslett, Great Barr, Birmingham, England
The Lunar Society Moonstones are nine carved sandstone blocks arranged in a circular pattern on a supermarket site. Each stone faces outward toward the surrounding roads and displays carved details connected to members of the historical society.
The stones were created in 1998 to commemorate a group of thinkers who met in Birmingham between 1765 and 1813. This collection of scientists and inventors was known for scheduling their meetings on full moon nights.
The memorial stones display the names of members who gathered during full moon nights in the city. They tell the story of a circle of inventors and thinkers who shaped Birmingham's industrial development.
The stones are visible from Aldridge Road and Queslett Road and sit next to a supermarket. Walking around the arrangement lets you see all nine blocks from different angles.
The stone dedicated to James Watt carries a special moon phase carving on its surface. This detail links the inventor's name directly to the memorial's lunar theme.
