Odeon, Kingstanding, Art Deco cinema building in Kingstanding, Birmingham, England.
The Odeon is an Art Deco cinema building in Kingstanding with a symmetrical facade of cream and black tiles, three slender fins, and a stepped brick parapet. The interior was once designed to hold around 1,300 visitors and now operates as a bingo hall.
The building opened in 1935 as a cinema for residents of the Kingstanding housing estate. It closed as a cinema in 1962 and was converted into a bingo hall, which continues operating today.
The space draws people from the surrounding homes for evening entertainment, and the foyer still welcomes visitors through its original tiled entrance despite the change in use over the decades.
The venue sits within a residential area and is easy to find from Kingstanding Circle. Visitors should expect the building to operate primarily as a leisure venue today.
The building received Grade II listed status just 44 years after it was built. This recognition came relatively quickly and reflects how the architects' design was considered important to British architectural history.
