Magna Science Adventure Centre, Science museum in Rotherham, England
Magna is a science museum built inside a former steelworks, featuring four pavilions dedicated to Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. More than 100 interactive exhibits fill the spaces for hands-on learning.
The site was once a Roman fort around 50 AD and later became a major steel factory. It was transformed into a science center while preserving its industrial heritage.
The hourly Big Melt show recreates steel production with fog, sparks, and fire, honoring the industrial past that shaped this region. Visitors witness firsthand how work once filled this place.
The center has an outdoor play area called Sci-Tek and a water play section called Aqua-Tek for hands-on fun. The entire building is wheelchair accessible with straightforward navigation throughout.
The building won the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize in 2001 for its innovative conversion of the steelworks into a modern space. The architecture demonstrates how industrial heritage can be successfully reimagined.
