MediaCityUK, Mixed-use development in Salford Quays, England
MediaCityUK is a district in Salford Quays that stretches along the ship canal, combining office towers, television studios, housing blocks, and shops on one continuous site. The area features public squares with water features, wide walkways along the quays, and modern buildings in glass and steel arranged around central green spaces.
The district arose on the site of old port facilities that remained unused for decades after closure, before conversion into a media center began in 2007. The first broadcasters moved in during 2011, bringing thousands of jobs to the formerly empty docks.
The name refers to media companies that built their offices along the waterfront promenade, their logos visible on glass facades. Visitors meet film crews on the squares, watch recordings outside studios, and experience daily life shifting between office work and creative productions.
The district can be reached by its own tram stop or on foot from neighboring areas, with routes mostly level and accessible. Weekends see fewer people than weekdays, as many offices remain closed.
The entire site became the first connected neighborhood in Europe to be certified under a digital standard that rates internet connection quality in all commercial buildings. Each office building received its own rating that remains publicly visible.
