Purn Hill, Scientific site in Bleadon, Somerset, England
Purn Hill is a limestone hilltop in Somerset that rises as a southward projection from the Mendip ridge. The site features open grassland slopes with diverse plant species adapted to chalk and limestone soil.
The site gained protected status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1990 due to the national importance of its grassland habitats. This designation reflected efforts to safeguard rare plant communities found on its slopes.
The Mendip Way walking trail crosses through Purn Hill, connecting visitors with traditional English countryside paths and natural heritage sites.
Two paths provide access to the site, with surfaces that become slippery and muddy during wet weather. Wear sturdy footwear and take extra care when exploring after rain or during damp conditions.
The hillside is home to three nationally rare plant species, including Somerset Hair-grass found nowhere else in the western Mendips. This specialized flora makes it a key location for botanical research and conservation efforts across Britain.
