See Monster, Art installation at Tropicana, Weston-super-Mare, United Kingdom.
See Monster is an outdoor art installation in Weston-super-Mare, England, built around a decommissioned North Sea gas platform. It rises across several levels that include gardens, seating, water features, and open viewing decks.
The installation was completed in 2022 as part of the UNBOXED festival, marking the first time a decommissioned North Sea platform had been turned into a work of public art. The project set a new example for how old industrial structures can be reused.
The installation blends industrial history with environmental ideas by turning an extraction platform into a space for art and growing things. Visitors can see how it connects industry and nature in its design and use.
The levels are connected by walkways and ramps, making it possible to move through the structure at a comfortable pace. Spending time on each deck gives a different view of the surrounding seafront.
The outer skin of the structure is covered with around 6,000 metal pieces shaped like scales, each one free to move in the wind. The surface never looks the same twice, depending on how the air moves around it.
