Priddy Caves, Cave system in Mendip Hills, Somerset, England

Priddy Caves is an extensive cave system in the Mendip Hills in Somerset with multiple major underground networks that together form dozens of kilometers of passages. The caves formed as water dissolved limestone over long periods, leaving behind complexly branching tunnels and chambers.

The system was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1965 to protect its geological importance for research and study. This recognition came after researchers understood the significance of the underground structures for understanding local geology.

Members of the Wells Natural History and Archaeological Society made the first documented entry into Swildon's Hole on August 16, 1901.

Access to the caves typically occurs through marked entrances such as Hunter's Hole, where a fixed ladder aids descent into the underground passages. The location near Hunters Lodge Inn provides orientation and parking for visitors exploring the area.

The sediments in the caves preserve records from past ice ages, showing how climate and landscape in southern England shifted over time. These geological layers help scientists reconstruct the environmental history of the region spanning thousands of years.
