Prior Park

Prior Park is a school building perched on a hilltop with classical Palladian design marked by tall columns and mirrored wings. The structure contains teaching spaces, residential areas for students, and grounds that step down the slope with formal gardens and open fields.

The house was commissioned in 1742 by a wealthy businessman and designed by architect John Wood the Elder as a showcase for local stone. It later served as the first Catholic university in England before establishing itself as a boarding school.

The building reflects how Bath's wealthy residents used grand homes to display their status and taste in the 1700s. Its limestone facades and carefully planned grounds show the style that made Bath a fashionable destination for the upper classes.

The site sits on a hillside with paths leading up and down, so comfortable walking shoes are advisable. Allow extra time to explore both the interior and the expansive grounds, as the building is large and spread across different levels.

The building endured two major fires that threatened its survival, yet restoration efforts managed to recreate its original character. Visitors who look closely can spot areas where repairs were carefully matched to the historic stonework.
