Rumbling Bridge, Village in Perth and Kinross, Scotland.
Rumbling Bridge is a village built across both sides of a deep gorge carved by the River Devon, with two historic bridges positioned one above the other creating a striking architectural feature. The landscape is defined by rocky cliffs, the rushing water below, and stone structures that span the chasm at different heights.
The first bridge was built in 1713 by William Gray, establishing a crossing point that led to settlement in the gorge. A second bridge was later constructed above the original, creating the distinctive double structure visible today.
During her final years, Dr. Grace Cadell, the first female surgeon in Scotland and suffragette leader, made her residence in Mosspark, Rumbling Bridge.
Walking paths run through the gorge and allow access to both sides of the village and different views of the bridges. The terrain can be uneven and steep in places, so sturdy footwear and care on slopes are helpful for comfortable exploration.
The lower bridge produces a distinctive rumbling sound when water rushes beneath it with force, especially during periods of heavy flow. This acoustic feature, which becomes more pronounced during wet weather or after rain, is what inspired the village's name.
