Seaforth Battery

Seaforth Battery, Artillery battery in Seaforth, England.

Seaforth Battery is a coastal artillery installation featuring four granite casemates positioned along the River Mersey. These reinforced structures were built to house large rifled guns and still stand as impressive examples of military engineering from the period.

Construction started in 1875 and finished in 1879 to bolster Liverpool's maritime security. Later improvements included searchlights installed in 1907 within two gun casemates to enhance nighttime surveillance of vessel movements.

The battery takes its name from the nearby settlement of Seaforth and stands as a visible reminder of military operations that once shaped the local landscape. Visitors today encounter a tangible link to the era when such installations were central to protecting the city's port activities.

The site sits directly on the coastline and provides views across the river and surrounding areas. Access inside the casemates is limited, but the exterior structures can be examined from outside to appreciate their engineering.

The battery operated as part of a coordinated defense system alongside Fort Perch Rock nearby. Both installations worked together to monitor different shipping channels on the Mersey, creating overlapping zones of protection.
