Liverpool2, Deep-water container terminal in Seaforth, United Kingdom
Liverpool2 is a deep-water container terminal in Seaforth, Liverpool, built to handle the largest modern cargo ships. The quay runs along the Mersey estuary and has enough depth to receive mega-containerships without any restrictions.
The terminal was developed during the 2010s and opened in 2016, after Liverpool's port had lost much of its trade over previous decades. It marked a return to large-scale international cargo shipping for the city.
The opening ceremony in 2016 brought together local figures including football legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Kenny Dalglish. Their presence showed how deeply the port is tied to the city's sense of identity.
The site sits within an active industrial port and is not freely open to the public. Anyone wishing to see the area should check in advance which parts are accessible, as strict safety rules apply throughout.
In 2020, the ship MSC Tamara unloaded close to 6,000 containers in a single operation at this terminal. That was the largest single container movement ever recorded at Liverpool up to that point.
