South Norwood Lake and Grounds, Recreational park with lake in South Norwood, England.
South Norwood Lake and Grounds is a park containing a lake alongside sports facilities in South Norwood. The grounds feature woodland areas, open grasslands, and a stream that flows through the natural landscape.
The lake began as a reservoir for the Croydon Canal, which transported goods between Croydon and New Cross from 1809 until 1836. After the canal closed, the site gradually transformed into a recreational space for the surrounding community.
The Norwood Sports Club, established in 1881, became one of the world's largest tennis centers at its height. The sports facilities that remain here still reflect the area's long-standing love of outdoor recreation and community activity.
The park can be reached through entrances on Auckland Road, Woodvale Avenue, and Sylvan Road. The paths are accessible for walking, and you will find various spots to rest or picnic throughout the grounds.
The lake supports six bat species and provides nesting habitat for great crested grebes, herons, and ring-necked parakeets on its island. This wildlife presence makes it a rewarding spot for observing nature in the midst of the city.
