Southchurch Hall, Medieval manor house museum in Southend-on-Sea, England.
Southchurch Hall is a timber-framed manor house with a surrounding moat, built around 1321. The building has a distinctive external Tudor chimney stack and an octagonal crown post roof featuring original blackened timbers that remain intact.
The land was granted to monks in 823 by a Saxon leader before this house was later built. Its long history spans from the early Middle Ages into modern times, with the building itself dating from the late medieval period.
The exhibition rooms show how people lived and worked in this area across centuries. You can see objects from medieval times that were discovered during repairs, telling the everyday story of the region.
Access is available from March through October, Wednesday to Sunday. Visitors can find refreshments in the exhibition rooms and should allow time to walk through the various displays at a comfortable pace.
The building holds status as a scheduled ancient monument and natural springs continue to feed the moat surrounding it. This water system has protected the house for hundreds of years and continues to function today.
