Established in 1912 by Waygood & Company after replacing an earlier moving walkway, the funicular railway underwent major renovations in 1930, 1959, and 1990.
The funicular represents early 20th-century British coastal engineering, serving generations of beachgoers and residents accessing different town levels.
Operating daily from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM, the funicular provides free transportation while accepting donations, subject to weather conditions and driver availability.
The railway functions with a single track system where a separate counterweight track runs directly beneath the main passenger track at 0.93 miles per hour.
