St. Agnes' Church, Freshwater, Parish church in Freshwater, England
St. Agnes' Church is a parish church in Freshwater with stone walls sourced from an old farmhouse on Hooke Hill and traditional Gothic architectural features. The building is distinctive for its thatched roof, which covers the entire structure.
The church was established in 1908 when Hallam Tennyson, 2nd Baron Tennyson, donated the land and his wife Audrey chose the dedication to St. Agnes. A stone dated 1622 built into the vestry wall came from an earlier building that once occupied the site.
The church serves as a gathering place where the local community comes together for worship and significant life events throughout the year. It remains a central point for religious practice in the village.
The church is accessible via Gate Lane and is registered as a Grade II listed building. Visitors should check ahead as the building hosts regular services and opening times may vary accordingly.
This is the only thatched church on the Isle of Wight, making it stand out among all religious buildings on the island. This rare construction method gives it a rural character quite different from typical modern church structures.
