Farringford House, Victorian country house in Freshwater, England
Farringford House is a country residence from 1806 featuring Gothic architectural details such as turreted staircase structures, ornamental stone work, and expansive bay windows. The property now offers guided visits and contains self-catering accommodations within its grounds.
Built in 1806, the house was purchased in 1856 by the prominent poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, who lived here until his death in 1892. During his residency, it became a significant location for literary life and culture in Victorian England.
This was the home of England's most celebrated poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, and you can still see his personal belongings and creative spaces throughout. The house conveys how a prominent literary family actually lived during the Victorian era.
The house welcomes visitors through guided tours running from April to October, allowing you to explore the interior rooms. Ten self-catering cottages are available on the grounds if you wish to extend your stay.
The restored walled garden grows plant varieties that were recorded in Emily Tennyson's Victorian journal, preserving the exact botanical selections from that era. This carefully maintained area reveals the family's horticultural interests and demonstrates how Victorian gardens were actually composed.
