Dimbola Lodge, Victorian museum and gallery in Freshwater, England
Dimbola Lodge is a Victorian building on the Isle of Wight created from two former fisherman's cottages joined by a Gothic-style central tower. It now serves as a museum and gallery with a tea room inside.
A photographer acquired the property in 1860 and used it intensively until 1875 as a workspace for creating portraits of artists and figures of the era. The building was later protected as a historic structure and now houses a collection from that creative period.
The house honors the work of a pioneering photographer who created portraits of artists and notable people here, shaping Victorian photography. Visitors can see works from that era and understand how photography was first embraced as an artistic medium.
The building is located in Freshwater and can be visited with guided tours and photography workshops available. The garden is accessible to visitors and offers space to walk around and linger.
A bronze statue of Jimi Hendrix stands in the garden, commemorating his performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival held nearby. The festival drew thousands of musicians and fans to the island that year.
