St Deiniol's Church, Grade II* listed Gothic church in Hawarden, Wales
St Deiniol's Church is a Gothic church in Hawarden, Wales, built in stone with pointed arches, a solid bell tower, and several interior chapels. It holds Grade II* listed status, which places it among buildings considered especially worth protecting in England and Wales.
The church was extensively restored in 1855 and 1856 by architect James Harrison, who shaped much of the building as it appears today. Just a year later, a fire caused serious damage and required further repair work to keep the structure standing.
The Gladstone Memorial Chapel inside holds a sculpture of William Ewart Gladstone, the former Prime Minister who lived nearby in Hawarden Castle. The work was made by Sir William Richmond and draws together local ties and national memory in a single room.
The church sits in the center of Hawarden and is easy to reach on foot from the village. Visiting outside of service times generally allows more freedom to look around the interior and the churchyard at your own pace.
The churchyard contains war graves from both World Wars alongside a memorial to those who died in the South African conflict, which is rare for a village of this size. These graves are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, so they remain in good order throughout the year.
