Sunbury Court Island, River island in Sunbury-on-Thames, United Kingdom
Sunbury Court Island is a residential area on the River Thames in Sunbury-on-Thames with around 25 houses and bungalows. The homes are connected by a decorative iron footbridge that features an Italianate tower.
The island was formerly called Hayes Ait and remained a rural meadow until the early 20th century. It was then transformed into a residential area with summer homes.
The nearby Grade II listed Sunbury Court mansion from 1723 serves as an international conference center for the Salvation Army. Visitors can observe the historic architecture of this building, though access to the island itself is restricted to residents.
The island is accessible only to residents, as it is a private residential area. Visitors can view the adjacent Sunbury Court building from outside and enjoy the Thames from nearby public pathways.
During winter floods in 2013-2014, emergency services conducted multiple rescues when water reached waist height on the island's pathways. The location's geography makes it vulnerable to regular flooding incidents throughout the year.
