Church of St Mary the Virgin

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a church in Sunbury-on-Thames featuring an octagonal entrance tower and a tall apsidal chancel with a south chapel. The building sits beside the Thames River and includes pillars carved with foliage patterns.

The building was designed and constructed in 1752 by Stephen Wright, the Clerk of Works at Hampton Court Palace. It replaced a medieval structure that previously stood on the same site.

The interior walls display paintings of Seraphims and Christ the King created by artists working locally in 1892. These works shape how the church space feels and reflect the artistic activity of that era.

The building is accessible from the riverside and can be reached on foot from the town center. Parking nearby is limited, so it is best to check accessibility in advance.

The interior decoration contains sgraffito works from 1892 designed by Heywood Sumner depicting scenes from the Gospels. This wall decoration technique is uncommon and makes the ornamentation particularly noteworthy.
