Rivermead Island, River island in Sunbury-on-Thames, United Kingdom.
Rivermead Island is a flat grassy area in the River Thames with meadows, scattered trees, and patches of thick shrubs covering most of the land. The island has natural shorelines and vegetation that changes with the seasons.
The island formed from two original land masses, including one called Swan's Rest, which joined together over time. These areas once held specific fishing rights for the southern parish.
The Sunbury Amateur Regatta takes place every late August and brings together boat racing, local officials, and community festivities on and around the island. Visitors can watch the traditional sporting event directly from this location.
A footbridge connects the island to the mainland and provides easy walking access from the shore. During dry periods when water levels drop, a ford crossing allows other ways to reach the island.
The island serves as an emergency flood meadow that protects surrounding areas by absorbing excess water when the Thames rises significantly. This ecological function is often invisible to visitors but plays an important role in flood management.
