Church of the Sacred Heart and St Catherine of Alexandria, Catholic church in Droitwich Spa, England
The Church of the Sacred Heart and St Catherine of Alexandria is a Catholic church in Droitwich Spa featuring extensive interior mosaics across its walls and ceilings. Around eight tons of Venetian glass was imported specifically to execute these decorative elements throughout the building.
The building was funded in the early twentieth century by Walter Loveridge Hodgkinson as a memorial to his wife Catherine. This project established an important religious landmark in the town during that era.
The interior mosaics were designed by Gabriel Pippet and draw inspiration from Italian churches that he studied in person. Visitors today can see how this artwork shapes the space and creates patterns of colored light throughout the building.
The church is located on Worcester Road and holds services on weekday mornings and multiple times on Sundays for those wishing to attend. Visitor access and opening times may vary on holidays and special occasions.
Designer Gabriel Pippet traveled to Ravenna and Rome to study ancient mosaic techniques before creating the patterns for this church. His Italian travels directly influenced the specific designs he produced for the building.
