The Diver, Steel sculpture in Rainham, United Kingdom
The Diver is a steel sculpture in Rainham depicting a human figure in diving position. The artwork comprises galvanized steel bands anchored into Thames mud, rising to a substantial height with a solid, geometric form.
The sculpture was created in 2000 by self-taught artist John Kaufman. The project received support from Havering London Borough Council and funding from Cleanaway.
The sculpture honors diving work and the labor culture that once defined the Thames riverfront. It serves as a reminder of the skilled workers who shaped this industrial area.
You can reach the sculpture by walking from Ferry Lane or Coldharbour Lane near the industrial area. Parking is available near the warehouse buildings in this part of Rainham.
During high tides the sculpture becomes partially submerged, and spring tides can cover it completely. This changing interaction between the artwork and the river creates an ever-shifting experience.
