Tower Building, Grade II* listed office building in downtown Liverpool, England.
The Tower Building is an eight-story office structure on the Strand facing waterfront, clad in white glazed terracotta with polygonal turrets that mark its architectural sections. The building now contains 73 residential apartments following a 2006 conversion, with the ground and lower levels serving commercial and retail tenants.
The current building was completed in 1908 and is the third structure on this location, where the first was erected in 1256 as a sandstone mansion. This continuity reflects the site's importance as a commercial hub from medieval times through to modern Liverpool.
The Tower Building forms part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site, standing near the Royal Liver Building and contributing to the city's commercial district landscape.
The building sits centrally on the Strand front, making it easily accessible as you walk through the waterfront area. The ground and lower floors are occupied by retail tenants, so visitors can appreciate the exterior and interior commercial spaces while moving through the district.
The building employs an uncommon construction technique where steel joists extend directly from the walls, eliminating the need for traditional support columns. This structural solution was a notable engineering approach when built, reflecting advanced construction methods of its era.
