Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas, Liverpool, Anglican parish church at Pier Head, Liverpool, United Kingdom
The Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas is an Anglican parish church located at Pier Head alongside the River Mersey in Liverpool. It features a prominent tall tower and a modern interior that was reconstructed following World War II damage.
An original chapel was established in 1355 but was completely destroyed in 1940 during wartime air raids. It was rebuilt according to modern designs and the reconstruction was finished in 1952.
The church holds deep ties to seafaring traditions as the parish place of worship for sailors, with Saint Nicholas honored as the patron saint of those who travel by sea. Visitors can sense this maritime connection through the church's furnishings and the stories of the people who have worshipped here over centuries.
The building sits directly on the Mersey waterfront and is easy to reach from the city center on foot. The three meeting rooms used by the parish are open to visitors and offer a glimpse into community activities.
When rebuilt, architect Edward C. Butler placed the altar at the western end of the church, which breaks with traditional design. This unconventional choice departed from the centuries-old practice of orienting altars toward the east.
