University of Bristol Society of Change Ringers, Bell ringing society at University of Bristol, England
The University of Bristol Society of Change Ringers is a student group dedicated to the traditional craft of church bell ringing through regular practice sessions. Members develop their skills at St Matthews Church in Kingsdown, where they gather each week.
The group started in 1943 and initially practiced at Long Ashton before relocating to St Michael on the Mount Without in 1944. Over the decades, it developed into a well-established part of university life.
Members gather for weekly practice sessions, annual dinners, and competitions that connect current students with alumni across multiple generations. These occasions create bonds between people from different years and backgrounds who share a passion for the craft.
Practice sessions happen on Tuesday evenings and welcome both newcomers and experienced ringers to join in. It is best to contact the group beforehand if you want to observe or participate, as sessions have specific starting times.
Since 1950 the group has performed over 700 peals, demonstrating a remarkable track record of skill and dedication. They also ring the Great George bell in the Wills Memorial Building for national occasions and celebrations.
