Wain's Hill

Wain's Hill is an Iron Age fort built on a promontory near Clevedon, featuring two ramparts to the east and protected by natural steep slopes elsewhere. The elevated position provided a strong defensive stance with commanding views across the landscape.

This fort emerged during the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages as part of a broader pattern of defended settlements spreading across Britain. It belongs to a period when elevated positions served both protection and control functions.

The site reflects early settlement patterns and shows how communities organized themselves on this elevated location. Visitors walking across the terrain can sense the traces of daily life from that distant period.

The site is open year-round and visitors can explore the preserved fortification structures while enjoying views toward the Severn Estuary. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the ground is uneven and paths can become slippery when wet.

The two eastern ramparts are relatively modest, while the other sides with their natural steep slopes formed the main defense system. This blend of human-made and natural barriers shows how skillfully early inhabitants read their surroundings.
