Royal Pier Hotel, Victorian hotel at Marine Parade, Clevedon, England
The Royal Pier Hotel is a Victorian building on Marine Parade in Clevedon featuring large windows and a distinctive facade with 19th-century architectural details. It was converted into residential apartments between 2014 and 2016 while retaining selected original features alongside modern additions.
Thomas Hollyman designed the original structure in 1823 as Rock House, later expanded and renamed by architect Hans Price in 1868. A devastating fire in 2003 caused severe damage, though local preservation efforts prevented complete demolition.
The hotel reflects how seaside towns developed during the Victorian era, offering travelers direct access to the coast and maritime arrivals. Its placement near the pier shows how accommodation was built to serve visitors arriving by water routes.
The building sits directly beside Clevedon Pier with views of the Severn Estuary and is easily reached via Marine Parade. It is within walking distance of the main local attractions along the seafront.
After the 2003 fire, the building sat abandoned for years before the local community rallied to save it from demolition. This rescue by community effort shows how small towns can protect their historical buildings from being lost.
