Woodbank, Stockport, Country house in Stockport, England
Woodbank is a Grade II* listed country house in Stockport built around 1814 in Greek Revival style, featuring a grand columned portico and symmetrical facade. The two or three-story structure follows classical proportions with a central entrance hall and evenly spaced windows arranged in a formal pattern.
The house was designed in 1814 by architect Thomas Harrison for Peter Marsland, a notable industrialist whose business ventures shaped Stockport's growth. Greek Revival architecture was a mark of wealth and modern taste among the rising industrial class of that period.
The building reflects the architectural tastes of wealthy industrialists who lived around Stockport in the early 1800s. It shows how successful businessmen of that era expressed their status through large, carefully designed country homes.
The building is not open to the public and can only be viewed from the outside. Visitors can observe the facade and external architecture from nearby, but interior access is not available.
The house has been unoccupied since 2009 and is listed on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register. Its deteriorated condition makes it an important case for preservation efforts in the region.
