Yester Castle

Yester Castle is a medieval fortress ruin in Gifford featuring a triangular layout with remnants of stone walls and a gatehouse positioned where two rivers meet. The remains show the typical design of a defensive stronghold from this period at this strategic location.

Sir Hugo de Giffard built the stone fortress before 1267 during the reign of King Alexander III, creating a strategic defensive position. The structure was part of the region's medieval fortification system.

The underground chamber called Goblin Ha' holds a place in local legend through stories about alleged supernatural practices. This tale has shaped how people in the region think about the site.

Access to the site requires prior permission from Castle Park Golf Club, and multiple paths cross the grounds. Visitors should expect potentially muddy terrain and wear sturdy footwear.

The underground Goblin Ha' consists of two levels connected by stairs, with ancient stone vaulting still standing. This preserved structure remains remarkably solid despite centuries of abandonment.
