Yoker, Residential district in Glasgow, Scotland
Yoker is a residential neighborhood sitting on the northern bank of the River Clyde, about 8 kilometers west of Glasgow's center. The area spreads alongside the river and borders Clydebank to the west.
The name comes from Scottish Gaelic 'Eochair' and has roots going back centuries. A ferry service crossed the Clyde from here to Renfrew starting in the fourteen hundreds.
Manufacturing brought steady work to the area throughout the twentieth century, shaping how people lived and what the neighborhood became. That industrial foundation remains visible in the district's character and street layout.
The Yoker railway station on the North Clyde Line connects the area to Glasgow's commuter network for easy access around the city. Several bus routes also run through Dumbarton Road, the main thoroughfare in the district.
A new road bridge opened at the old ferry crossing point in the 2020s, replacing a water transport route that had lasted for centuries. This modern link still connects the two sides of the Clyde as the ferry once did.
