Heron Quays, DLR transit station in Canary Wharf, United Kingdom
Heron Quays is a DLR station in Canary Wharf, London, built directly into the base of an office tower complex on the Isle of Dogs. The platforms sit above street level and are reached through the building itself, via stairs, escalators, and lifts.
The station opened in 1987 as part of the first DLR line into Canary Wharf, when the area was just beginning its transformation from disused docklands. It was fully rebuilt between 2001 and 2002 to keep pace with the growth of the surrounding financial district.
A commemorative plaque inside the station marks a 1982 aircraft landing that eventually led to the creation of London City Airport. Visitors passing through can spot this small reminder of how aviation shaped the wider area.
The station sits on the southern edge of the Canary Wharf cluster, a short walk from the main Canary Wharf station. Because the entrance runs through an office building, it helps to follow the signs inside carefully, especially on a first visit.
When the station first opened in 1987, it stood surrounded by empty warehouses and abandoned quays, with almost no passengers to speak of. The towers and offices that now loom over it were built around and above the station long after trains first stopped here.
