Axwell House, English country house in Blaydon, England.
Axwell House is a three-storey stone structure in Gateshead with a slate roof and three-bay facade design. A pediment crowns the formal south front, defining the appearance of this Grade II* listed country property.
The house was constructed in 1758 for Sir Thomas Clavering, replacing an earlier manor that his family had owned since 1629. Later modifications around 1818 updated the building to reflect changing architectural tastes of that period.
The house displays classical English design through its proportioned facade and formal south front with a pediment. The architectural choices reflect the elevated social standing its owners once held in the region.
The property sits in an area with easy pedestrian access to green spaces and historic structures nearby. The site is best visited during daylight hours when natural light highlights the architecture and surroundings.
The gardens and ornamental lakes surrounding the house follow design principles laid out by landscape architect Capability Brown. This type of garden work represented a significant investment that only wealthy families could afford at the time.
