Sir William Powell's Almshouses, Almshouse in Fulham, England
Sir William Powell's Almshouses is a residential complex with twelve one-bedroom flats positioned along one side of All Saints Church in a quiet neighborhood of Fulham. Each flat contains a combined living and kitchen area, a separate shower room, and access to shared gardens and laundry facilities.
The complex was constructed in 1869 during the Victorian era as part of a charitable movement to provide housing for elderly people. Its Grade II* listing recognizes it as an important example of how communities addressed the need for elderly accommodation during that period.
The almshouses were named after their founder and continue to serve women over 55 from the local Fulham area. This reflects a long-standing tradition of community care that remains visible in how the buildings are actively used today.
The site sits beside an active church, so visitors should approach with respect for the ongoing use of the space. It is best to visit outside of service times when the area is quieter and more accessible.
The western side of the complex features decorative gate piers, railings, and entrance gates that give the building distinctive character. These crafted details reflect Victorian design standards and are key to why the structure earned its protected status.
