Fulham War Memorial, War memorial and Grade II listed statue in Vicarage Gardens, Fulham High Street, London, United Kingdom.
Fulham War Memorial is a Portland stone monument topped with a bronze Peace figure rising above a three-stepped base. A kneeling cherub rests beside a cross at the foundation, completing the composition that speaks to remembrance.
The memorial was unveiled in 1921 and designed by sculptor Alfred Turner to honor local residents lost in both World Wars. It was relocated in 1934 from Fulham Palace Road to its present site for better care and visibility.
The bronze figure of Peace serves as a gathering point where visitors come to reflect on loss and sacrifice. The inscriptions speak directly to those who pass by, making the memorial feel like a conversation between past and present.
The memorial is located in Vicarage Gardens near the approach to Putney Bridge and is easy to reach on foot. The site sits on sloping ground, so wearing sturdy shoes and allowing quiet time for reflection is recommended.
The torch held by the Peace figure was a bold artistic statement in the post-World War I era. This detail reveals how Turner chose to represent not just mourning but also hope for a better future.
