St Ambrose's Church, Speke, Roman Catholic church in Speke, England
St Ambrose's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Heathgate Avenue featuring a central bell tower clad in brown brick. The structure follows a rectangular layout with ten bays along its length and seven across its width, with a three-bay entrance section.
Construction began in 1959 and was completed in 1961 by architect Alfred Bullen to serve the rapidly growing Speke housing area. The building represents a significant post-war addition to the local community.
The church displays stained glass windows created by the renowned artist Patrick Reyntiens alongside Stations of the Cross by sculptor Adam Kossowski. These artworks shape the interior space and give the place its distinctive character.
The church functions as an active parish under the Archdiocese of Liverpool and holds regular services for worshippers. Visitors can explore the interior, view the religious artworks, and observe the space during or outside service times.
This church was a pioneer in English Catholic architecture and among the first of its kind built with a rectangular floor plan and a free-standing altar following modern liturgical requirements. This design approach allowed for new ways of conducting worship and gathering as a community.
