Black Rock Gorge, Natural gorge in Easter Ross, Scotland
Black Rock Gorge is a natural defile carved through sandstone in Easter Ross, with sheer cliffs towering above the narrow valley where the River Glass flows. The water has cut a deep and winding passage through the rock, creating a confined space where visitors walk beneath high stone walls on either side.
The gorge was carved during the last Ice Age when meltwater from glaciers cut through Old Red Sandstone, a process that took thousands of years to create the deep channels visible today. Glacial forces shaped the landscape fundamentally, leaving behind the narrow passage and high walls that define the place.
Local stories speak of the Lady of Balconie, a mysterious figure linked to the gorge in regional folklore and memory. Visitors walking through the narrow passage can sense the deep connection this place holds in the imagination of the surrounding community.
The gorge is accessible from Evanton village via marked walking paths that suit different levels of ability. Two footbridges are positioned along the route to offer various vantage points without requiring special equipment or experience.
The gorge served as a filming location for a major fantasy film where combat scenes involving a mythical creature were shot. Few visitors realize that Hollywood came to this remote Scottish location to capture dramatic moments for the screen.
