Central Bandstand, Herne Bay, Art deco bandstand in Herne Bay, England
The Central Bandstand is a music pavilion on Herne Bay's seafront, constructed with concrete pillars extending over the beach and featuring a raised stage facing the sea. The building combines enclosed areas with open balconies designed to accommodate concerts, performances, and exhibitions.
The bandstand was built in 1924 as an early example of reinforced concrete construction and received an art deco façade in 1932 that distinguishes its appearance. Major renovation work in the late 1990s updated the structure and ensured its continued use.
The bandstand serves as a gathering place where visitors and locals experience live performances and seasonal celebrations by the sea. Its position on the promenade shows how the structure anchors social life along the coastline.
The structure sits right on the seafront promenade and is easily accessible on foot from the main beach areas. Visitors will find seating options both in covered sections and on open balconies, with good sightlines from most positions.
The structure was among the first buildings in Britain to be entirely made of reinforced concrete, a technical innovation for its era. Its original design allowed seawater to flow underneath the pavilion, a feature altered in later decades by structural modifications.
