Top Storey Club, Nightclub in Bolton, England
Top Storey Club was a nightclub housed in a converted mill warehouse on Crown Street that occupied multiple levels across an irregular footprint. The building took advantage of sloping terrain, resulting in three floors at the street front and eight floors at the rear, with the River Croal visible beyond the structure.
The venue opened in the early 1960s as an entertainment establishment that regularly drew about 200 patrons. A deadly fire broke out on 1 May 1961, killing 19 people, with the tragedy attributed to inadequate escape routes and insufficient safety precautions.
The venue accommodated 200 guests who gathered to dance to tape-recorded music, representing a typical entertainment establishment of the early 1960s in England.
The club was accessed through a wooden staircase that served as the main exit route, while a secondary door behind the bar was blocked by the dance floor installation. The layout created serious restrictions on how people could move in and out of the space during an emergency.
The building's position on a slope created an unusual structure with different floor counts between the front and rear sections overlooking the River Croal.
