Chapel in the Wood, Gothic Revival chapel in Strawberry Hill, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England
The Chapel in the Wood is a Gothic Revival structure with a Portland stone facade and slate roof located in Richmond upon Thames. The interior features a blue and gold vaulted ceiling with architectural details inspired by Salisbury Cathedral.
The structure was built between 1772 and 1774 for writer Horace Walpole as part of his Strawberry Hill House residence. It became an early example of the Gothic Revival movement in English architecture.
The building was rededicated to the Virgin Mary in 1954 and received an Italian statue and new stained glass windows during its restoration. Visitors can see these religious artworks displayed inside today.
The building is currently undergoing repairs led by St Mary's University to address water damage issues. Visitors should expect possible access restrictions or construction activity during their visit.
The blue and gold vaulted ceiling displays uncommon design patterns that show the early Gothic Revival style and blend decorative elements in a striking way. Few visitors notice how these details reflect the experimental approach to neogothic design from that period.
