Church of St Mary, Gothic parish church in Slough, England
Church of St Mary is a red brick church in Slough with a distinctive tower containing ten bells. The interior features stained glass windows and a pipe organ with three manuals and 2,400 pipes.
The building was constructed between 1876 and 1878 according to John Oldrid Scott's design, with financial support from Queen Victoria. Its creation reflects the Victorian-era growth of Slough as a developing town.
This church represents the Anglican faith community in Slough and serves as a recognizable landmark that residents pass regularly in the town centre. The red brick structure has become woven into how local people understand and navigate their neighborhood.
The church is regularly open for services at different times throughout the week. It is best to check current visiting times beforehand to ensure you arrive when you can access the building.
The west window from 1915, designed by Alfred Wolmark, is one of the earliest examples of completely abstract stained glass in religious buildings. This innovative design demonstrates early artistic experimentation within church spaces.
