Ardblair Castle, Tower house in Blairgowrie, Scotland
Ardblair Castle is a three-story tower house with an L-shaped layout located in Blairgowrie, Scotland. The building has a circular stair turret topped with a cone-shaped roof and was later expanded with additional structures that frame a central courtyard.
The Blair family received the estate in 1399 through a royal grant from King David II. The property passed to the Oliphants of Gask in 1792 through marriage, marking a major change in who controlled the land.
The castle holds Jacobite artifacts that were moved here from Gask during the 1900s, telling stories of a major Scottish political movement. These objects are now part of what you see when you visit the rooms inside.
The building retains its original vaulted basement with a large fireplace, while the main floor features a dining room from the 1700s with wooden paneling. Expect narrow stairs and uneven floors throughout the rooms you will walk through.
In the courtyard stands a sundial made in 1623 that has twenty-five different dial faces rather than just one. This rare timepiece reveals the remarkable skill of craftspeople from that period and often goes unnoticed by casual visitors.
