Blairgowrie, Wellmeadow, War Memorial, War memorial in Blairgowrie, Perth and Kinross, Scotland
Blairgowrie Wellmeadow War Memorial is a category A listed war memorial standing in Wellmeadow, the triangular central square of Blairgowrie in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It takes the form of a stone base topped by a bronze statue of a soldier in full uniform, holding his rifle with his head bowed.
The memorial was unveiled in June 1921, shortly after the end of the First World War, to honor the 175 men from the area who died in that conflict. Further names were added after the Second World War, and a plaque for soldiers who fell in the Korean War was later placed alongside.
The memorial is central to community life in Blairgowrie, especially on Remembrance Sunday when residents gather to lay poppy wreaths at its base. The bronze figure of a soldier with a bowed head creates a still focal point in the middle of the busy Wellmeadow square.
The memorial sits in the middle of Wellmeadow, Blairgowrie's central square, and is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in town. The square is open year-round, and benches nearby offer a place to sit and take in the surroundings.
The bronze statue was made by Alexander Carrick, a Scottish sculptor known for his work on several war memorials across Scotland. The figure of the soldier stands out for its lifelike posture, showing a man as he might look in the moments after battle rather than in a heroic pose.
