Fort Stamford, Victorian coastal fort in Plymouth, England
Fort Stamford stands on a hill at 165 feet elevation between Jennycliffe Bay and Hooe Lake, featuring a five-sided polygonal design with three landward faces and one seaward face.
The fort, constructed between 1861 and 1869 by George Roach and Company, formed part of the extensive fortification scheme to protect Plymouth from potential naval attacks.
This military structure represents the Victorian era defense strategy, with its original capacity to accommodate 200 men across thirteen sets of barrack casements over two floors.
The fort now serves multiple functions as a caravan park, fitness center, and private residential flats, while maintaining its status as a scheduled monument since 1963.
The fort contained twenty guns and six mortars in its original configuration, including five 64 Pounder Rifled Muzzle Loading Guns by 1893.
