Liffock House

Liffock House is a stone cottage with a distinctive thatched roof located in Castlerock. The thick walls, small windows, and compact design reflect the building methods of rural dwellings from that period.

The cottage was built in 1691 and ranks among the oldest surviving thatched buildings in County Londonderry. It represents early settlement patterns and construction practices from that era.

The rooms reveal how families lived and worked in close quarters across generations within a single dwelling. The sparse furnishings and simple layout show the daily reality of rural life in this part of Northern Ireland.

The National Trust maintains this site and welcomes visitors to explore the local architectural heritage. Access is clearly marked and the building is open to visitors during regular hours.

The building showcases rare techniques for securing and maintaining thatch roofing from the 17th century. These traditional methods of roof construction are seldom seen in modern buildings.
