Church of St Teresa of Avila, Birkdale, Gothic Revival church in Birkdale, England
The Church of St Teresa of Avila is a Gothic Revival church constructed with red brick and red sandstone details, featuring a cruciform layout with a narrow nave and transepts. Pointed arches and distinctive stained glass windows define its interior and exterior appearance.
The church was built between 1897 and 1898 by architects James Sinnott, Bernard Sinnott, and Daniel Powell as an expansion of the nearby St Joseph's Church. Its construction reflected the growing needs of the local Catholic community in the area.
The interior displays stained glass windows by Earley and Company depicting English martyrs and saints, complemented by additional works from Hardman Studios.
The building serves as an active Catholic church with regular services throughout the week and has a connected presbytery on the north side. Visitors should plan to visit during service times and approach the space with appropriate reverence.
The sanctuary features carved angels and a Latin inscription reading 'Ecce Panis Angelorum' positioned above the high altar, while a separate reredos depicting Saint Teresa occupies the south transept. These decorative elements reveal the craftsmanship invested in the sacred space.
