Southport Arts Centre, arts centre with theatre, library and art gallery in Southport, Merseyside, England
Southport Arts Centre is a Grade II listed sandstone building with a distinctive clock tower located on Lord Street in Sefton. Built in 1873-1874, it now serves as a multi-purpose arts complex featuring a theatre with about 440 seats, art galleries, a flexible studio space, a library, shops, and a cafe.
The building was constructed in 1873-1874 by architects Maxwell and Tuke and originally named Cambridge Hall, with its foundation stone laid by Princess Mary of Cambridge. The 132-foot-tall clock tower with four-sided clock faces and five bells became a landmark feature over time.
The building was originally called Cambridge Hall when it opened as a gathering place in the 1870s. Today it operates as a cultural hub where people come to experience theatre, view art exhibitions, and take part in creative workshops and events.
The centre is centrally located on Lord Street and easily accessible on foot, with lifts and facilities for people with disabilities throughout all floors. Visitors can attend workshops, view exhibitions, watch theatre performances, and enjoy the ground-floor cafe and gift shop.
The clock tower features five bells that chime the hours and its four large clock faces can be seen from across town. The tower top is covered with lead sheets and has been carefully maintained since Princess Mary of Cambridge blessed the project at its opening.
