Atkinson Art Gallery and Library, Art center and library in Southport, England
The Atkinson Art Gallery and Library occupies a Victorian sandstone building with a three-bay front and Corinthian columns on Lord Street in Southport.
The center opened in 1878 following a £15,000 donation from William Atkinson, a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough who frequently visited Southport.
The institution maintains collections of fine art, decorative pieces, historical items, and Egyptology exhibits across multiple floors of exhibition space.
The ground floor houses a public library with research materials, while upper levels contain museum spaces and galleries open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
The tympanum pediment features carved personifications of Art, Science, Literature, Inspiration, and Commerce above the main entrance.
