Angel Hotel, hotel in Cardiff, Wales
The Angel Hotel is a hotel and bar on Castle Street in central Cardiff, directly across from Cardiff Castle. The red-brick building was built in the English Renaissance style and has a dining room, lounge, and bar on the ground floor.
The site has had an inn since the 1600s, but the current building was put up in the 1800s when the road in front of the castle was widened. It was finished in 1883 and briefly used by the US Navy during the First World War.
The Angel Hotel sits facing Cardiff Castle, and this position makes it a natural landmark for anyone arriving in the city center. Locals and visitors alike use it as a reference point when navigating the area around the castle grounds.
The hotel sits in the walkable center of Cardiff, with the main shopping area, castle, and civic buildings all within a short walk. The front desk is open around the clock, which makes it easy to get local tips or arrive at any hour.
The Cardiff Cricket Club was founded in one of the hotel's meeting rooms in 1888, which ties the building directly to the early history of local sport. Among the guests who stayed here were the Beatles and Greta Garbo.
