Poplar Rates Rebellion Mural, Political protest mural in Hale Street, Tower Hamlets, England.
The mural features four panels depicting George Lansbury and local residents holding banners with the message 'Can't Pay Won't Pay' against taxation inequality.
Created in 1990 by Mark Francis, this artwork commemorates the 1921 Poplar Rates Rebellion when thirty councilors were imprisoned for refusing unfair tax collection.
The names of twenty-nine imprisoned councilors are inscribed at the base of the mural, representing local resistance against economic disparities in London's East End.
Located on the wall of the Tower Hamlets Parks Department depot, the mural underwent restoration work in 2007 by artists David Bratby and Maureen Delenian.
The mural connects two periods of tax resistance: the 1921 Rates Rebellion and the 1990s Poll Tax protests through its imagery and messages.
